basic of Goods and services tax

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax in India that replaced multiple central and state taxes. It is levied on the supply of goods and services and is categorized into:

  • CGST – Central GST (collected by the central government)
  • SGST/UTGST – State/Union Territory GST (collected by the state/UT government)
  • IGST – Integrated GST (on inter-state supplies)

GST Returns for Regular Taxpayers

Regular taxpayers registered under GST need to file periodic returns to report their sales, purchases, tax collected, and tax paid.

Key GST Returns:

  1. GSTR-1 – Monthly or quarterly return for outward supplies (sales)
    • Due Date: 11th of the following month (monthly); 13th of the month following the quarter (quarterly under QRMP scheme)
  2. GSTR-3B – Monthly or quarterly summary return for tax payment
    • Due Date: 20th, 22nd, or 24th of the following month (depending on the state and scheme)
  3. GSTR-9 – Annual return (if turnover exceeds ₹2 crore)
    • Due Date: 31st December of the next financial year

Note: Timely filing is essential to avoid penalties and maintain input tax credit eligibility.
